Gout is accompanied many times with excruciating pain. The pain lessens over time but can still affect your life. Once a gout attack has started, your life is basically on hold until you can control the pain. A gout attack usually strikes suddenly, at night, and is most common in the large joint of the big toe. Gout (also called metabolic arthritis) is a disease caused by an excess of uric acid in the blood that leads to crystalline deposits in the small joints.
